In the beatitudes and throughout his Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents an ideal we should all strive toward and the reward that will be given to us. When we seek God’s kingdom and righteousness first, there is reward not only in heaven but also on earth.

Jesus sought out his disciples and called them into a relationship. Our primary call is to follow Jesus the king. We are also called to be catchers of people for his kingdom. How do we catch people? We follow what Jesus did: healing, proclaiming, and teaching.

After his baptism, Jesus is tempted by the Devil to seek his own will and his own way rather than trust God. But Jesus defeats Satan’s temptations. We have hope because Jesus overcame the evil one. We also have the same resource Jesus employed to defeat temptations – the Word of God.

At his baptism, Jesus is inaugurated as king. His baptism gives meaning to our baptism. In our baptism, we are identified with Christ, adopted as beloved children of God, set apart and empowered for God’s service. We are to live out of our new identity in Christ.

Are we ready for the coming of God’s kingdom? How do we prepare for the coming of God’s reign? We are to repent and be baptized by the Spirit of God. We produce the fruit in keeping with repentance. We point others to Christ.
