In chapter 5, Paul addresses another problem in the Corinthian church: sexual immorality. Paul tells them to get rid of the old yeast before it affects the whole dough; they are to expel the immoral member. Chapter 5 is a call to church discipline. The church is the body of Christ, a living organism where one part can affect the health of the whole body. A little cancer can spread to the whole body. But the purpose of church discipline is not in the removal of a member, but in the restoration of the member after repentance. Would we have the courage to perform surgery if a cancer develops?
