January 1: “To Worship is Human” (Philippians 1:9-11, Colossians 3:15-16)

What does it mean to be human? Descartes said: I think, therefore I am. But we are not defined by what we know, but by what we desire. We are what we love. And we worship what we love. That means that we don’t grow in our discipleship by gaining knowledge, but by orienting our desires to God. Reforming our loves and directing them to God is learned through imitations, practices and rituals. The most important practice is weekly worship. Worship is a ritual that reforms our hearts to love God.
