David is facing danger and calls out, “God, keep me safe!” As he faces death, David recalls who God is: God is his refuge, his Lord, his treasure, his counselor. David remembers how God has been good to him and how God counseled him in the path of life. That’s when David’s faith is strengthened, and his petition for safety turns to confidence that God will preserve his life. Psalm 16 is more than David’s personal testimony. It is a Messianic Psalm that points to Jesus Christ. Like David, all who trust in God’s Messiah will preserve their lives and be filled with joy for eternity.
