Until now, Paul has argued for the unity of the church by focusing on the cross. In chapter 3, Paul appeals for unity by emphasizing that the church belongs to God. Paul uses three metaphors to describe the church: God’s field, God’s building, and God’s temple. Church leaders are God’s servants who belong to God. We cannot have a greater loyalty to a servant than to that servant’s Lord. And it’s not just the leaders—the church and the whole cosmos belong to God. We will reflect on the implications of God’s ownership of the church.
