Leviticus 23 lists God’s appointed festivals. To live as God’s holy people, we need to celebrate God’s appointed times. The cornerstone of God’s appointed times is the Sabbath. Though the Sabbath is God’s day, it was meant for our good. It reminds us of who God is and who we are. It gives life for the whole community. We don’t keep the Sabbath in order to be more productive. It is a sanctification of time and being. We keep the Sabbath to be rooted in our true identity as God’s beloved people.
