The second part of Leviticus is about how Israel is to live a holy life. God’s presence in Israel’s midst affects every aspect of their lives. Chapters 18 and 20 show that Israel needs to be set apart in their sexual practice as well. Sex outside God’s boundary will defile God’s tabernacle and the land. These laws protect the integrity and purity of the family which is the core of the community. God’s people are to restrain their sexual appetites for the sake of holiness, family and the wider community. That’s how we love others. The standards of sexual purity still apply to Christians today. We purify ourselves so that we can be united with Christ.
