How is Christ present at the Lord’s Supper? This question was much debated in 16th Century Europe. Do we have any clue in the Bible? In our text, Paul says that the Lord’s Supper is a participation both in Christ and in His people. Baptism is our union with Christ and His people. The Lord’s Supper is our communion with Christ and His people. If baptism is like engrafting a branch, the Lord’s Supper is like a branch receiving nourishment from the tree. We need God’s Word and the Lord’s Supper to grow and bear much fruit.
