Mark notes that when Jesus was crucified, darkness came over the whole land at noon. Darkness symbolizes God’s judgment. On the cross, Jesus became sin for us and bore God’s judgment. Jesus experienced the darkness of hell in our place so that we would not have to. After taking us into the darkness, Mark draws us into the light of God’s presence and the light of God’s Son. Because Jesus went into the darkness, we can be brought into the light. Because Jesus died in our place, we are made alive. How should we respond to love like this?
