Finally, God appears and speaks. God’s speech doesn’t seem to answer Job’s question, and yet Job is satisfied with it. Why? First, the fact that God spoke to Job at all showed that Job’s relationship with God was intact. Being in God’s presence was enough. God is the answer to all of Job’s questions. Second, God’s speech is not irrelevant to Job’s suffering. God’s words assured Job that God is trustworthy because God is good, all-powerful, and all-knowing. Though our suffering feels so random, God is able to use our suffering for God’s good purpose. Though the loss feels irreversible, God is able to redeem our loss. In response to God’s grace, Job rejects his own effort to justify himself and entrusts his whole life to God’s sovereign plan.
