Our habits are not always acquired intentionally. Habits can be formed unintentionally when we regularly repeat rituals without recognizing their formative power. The cultural liturgies are formative practices that work on us unconsciously, training our hearts to love rival kingdoms. One example is shopping in the mall, a practice that turns us into consumers who love the latest goods. To live as Christians, we need “apocalyptic eyes” to see which liturgies work on our hearts to love gods other than Christ. Waking up to the power of secular liturgies would open us to appreciate the importance of Christian liturgies like worship. This week, let us take a liturgical audit of our life.
